Fox, ‘Glee’ show students the money with ‘GLEE Give a Note’ contest

I like to write to entertain. But now it’s strictly to inform — about a good cause.

That cause is what Glee executive producer Ryan Murphy has espoused since Day One of the show: arts education.

With arts funds being cut in many schools — a topic Glee tackled in Season 3, starting Sept. 20 — Fox Home Entertainment and the National Association for Music Education conducted a nationwide contest to choose high schools for funding grants of $10,000 to $50,000 for their arts programs. Winners were chosen from the most creative videos showing why a school should get a grant.

The money — with  $1 million guarantee — came from Fox donating $1 from each Blu-Ray and DVD sale of Glee Season 3 to the cause. The total donation to a total of 73 scho0ls was to be $1 million, regardless of sales.

THIS JUST IN: Over one million votes were cast, and on that basis, Twentieth Century Fox Television, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) have named winners in the “GLEE Give a Note” effort.

Seventy-three American schools will get grants between $10,000 and $50,000 to help them keep struggling music programs going. Just as Sue Sylvester attacked arts programs on Glee in the bad economy, such programs suffer in reality, so the Give a Note campaign will do much good.

Schools winning a grand prize of $50,000 for their music and arts programs are PS 48 Joseph R Drake in the Bronx, NY, Clark Montessori Junior and High School in Cincinnati, OH and Phil Campbell High School in Phil Campbell, AL. Also being awarded are 10 first place prize grants of $25,000 and 60 second place prize grants of $10,000.

If Glee makes you proud as a fan, this effort should make you even prouder. From the top!
